In the ever changing world of road transport, staying on top of safety and compliance can be a challenge for any haulier. That’s where Lee Pritchard and his company, LDP Transport Consultancy Ltd (LDP), steps in.
With decades of experience in the sector, Lee is on a mission to help hauliers stay legal and safe. From compliance advice to practical training, he’s dedicated to keeping operators on the right side of the law – and more importantly, keeping them safe on the road.
Lee’s journey into consultancy evolved naturally after years of practical experience. Reflecting on his career, Lee shares,
“I began in transport administration. That helped me learn how things worked behind the scenes. Then I became an HGV driver, which showed me a different side to the business. Driving helped me understand more about discipline, planning, and logistics.”
After gaining valuable experience as an HGV driver, Lee began delivering driver training. These skills paved the way for him to step into a Transport Manager role. Overseeing operations, he became immersed in the world of compliance, safety, and efficiency.
“As a Transport Manager, my job was to ensure everything ran smoothly,” says Lee. “I kept HGV operators and drivers on track and made sure the company stayed compliant. I also spent four years working on the Olympic Park in London, managing logistics, plant, and machinery.”
By now, Lee had noticed that many companies struggled to keep up with compliance. Seeing a gap in the market, he began working on the idea for LDP. In July 2020, during the height of the Covid pandemic, Lee decided to take the plunge and launch his business.
“The pandemic added an extra layer of uncertainty. It was a massive risk, but I thought if I don’t do it now, I’ll never do it,” Lee recalls. My wife Kelly was so supportive. She said, ‘What’s the worst that can happen?’ and that gave me the push I needed.”
Lee started LDP with one client – his former employer – and has been steadily growing the company ever since.
“My role there shifted to consultancy, which freed up time for me to grow the business,” explains Lee. “I’ll never forget that. It was brilliant. It’s been a slow burner so far, but I firmly believe in laying the proper groundwork before building.”
One of the most exciting developments at LDP is The Haulier’s Hub. This subscription-based platform helps HGV operators manage their compliance. For £99 + VAT per month, they gain access to a wealth of resources including templates, documents, and a free annual audit. It’s aimed at businesses of all sizes and designed to keep their operations safe and compliant.
“The Haulier’s Hub came about by accident. I was chatting with a web designer about refreshing my brand and website. As we brainstormed ideas, we came up with the idea of a platform where companies could access information without needing to call me. It streamlines the process, making compliance easier for everyone.”
Lee believes The Haulier’s Hub is a unique offering in the UK, adding that it allows him to help more companies.
“We’re the only platform offering this kind of service, as far as I’m aware,” he says. “It’s still evolving, and we’re always adding new features to make it even better for our clients. It’s all about being proactive and the annual operator licence audit is a key selling point. Lots of people only reach out for help when they’re in trouble with the authorities. But we aim to keep them compliant year round.”
LDP isn’t only about helping companies avoid penalties – Lee wants to build long-term relationships with operators across the UK.
“The legislation is the same whether you’ve got one wagon or 100,” Lee says. “We work with everyone, from small operators to large businesses.”
As LDP continued to grow, Lee realised he needed a professional office space. After relocating to a nearby village, he began exploring local options and discovered The Business Village.
“Working from home wasn’t ideal and I knew I needed a proper office. The Business Village was the first place I found. It was exactly what I was looking for and the postcode was perfect.”
Since moving in, Lee has been impressed by the facilities and overall atmosphere.
“The vibe here is fantastic,” he says. “Having 24/7 access is essential because I often work on evenings and weekends. The on-site parking is great too as clients can pop in without worrying about where to park. I also find it motivating here – there’s always something happening. My job can be lonely at times, but I love sitting in the Bistro with a coffee and being around other people.”
Lee is also keen to explore opportunities for collaboration with other tenants.
“I had a problem with a document last week and it was great asking reception for recommendations instead of looking elsewhere. I enjoy supporting other local businesses and knowing we can meet in person instead of just emailing.”
Looking ahead, Lee has clear ambitions for LDP – but they’re not about rapid expansion or sales targets. Instead, his goal is to maintain the personal, hands-on approach that his clients have come to value.
“Success for me isn’t about hitting turnover targets,” says Lee. “It’s about helping people and keeping them compliant and safe on the roads. It’s about being in a position to take on more clients while still providing the same level of service.”
Lee’s goal is simple:
“I just want to keep helping people. Keeping them compliant. Keeping them rolling on the road. And if that means taking more people on and servicing them, then great.”
